In an odd move, it seems the Subaru Impreza, at least here in Australia, is no longer going to be a 4-door all wheel drive turbo sedan but a 4-door turbo hatchback only.
It’s not all bad news with Subaru Australia telling us the car will be more sophisticated, though perhaps be more conservative in it’s styling and may come with a more potent version of the 2.5 litre motor currently found in the WRX range. Wether this stands up to the more powerful 2.0L turbo S-GT engine currently found in the JDM model of the WRX is yet to be seen.
Subaru Australia stresses the new car will be a more refined, more upmarket car and will be joined by the STi model, however that won’t arrive until around February of next year. The Impreza range will be launched locally at the end of August and go on sale the following month.
Either way the release is going to be interesting not just in terms of seeing if the hints given come true but also in terms of how the market responds to only having a choice between hatchback models
